Domestic violence is a health, legal, economic, educational, human rights, and developmental problem. Therefore, effective strategies must be designed to operate across a broad range of areas. One key component of ameliorating domestic violence is providing access to the legal resources that helps women disentangle themselves from lives of violence and abuse. The YWCA Omaha legal department provides free legal services to victims of domestic violence in family law cases, which includes divorce, custody, protection and harassment order hearing, child support matters, contempt hearing, and modifications. YWCA Omaha is committed to ensuring victim safety and providing options by connecting them to the referrals and support required to achieve self- sufficiency; i.e. legal assistance that gives victims physical, emotional and financial distance from their current situation.

Overall, YWCA Omaha provides a holistic approach to legal services for low-income victims of domestic violence, stalking and sexual assault. To help fund these services, YWCA partners with Legal Aid of Nebraska to receive referrals of clients that Legal Aid is otherwise unable to assist due to staffing, funding or other conflicts. In cases where Legal Aid of Nebraska is unable to partner with the YWCA due to conflicts of interest, income restrictions, etc., the legal department also accepts clients via referrals from the Nebraska State Bar Association, Creighton Legal Clinic, and other legal practitioners in the community
